Baby's first birthday cake smash photo session at Melissa Larson's Leeming studio, Perth

A cake smash is one of the most joyful ways to celebrate your baby's first birthday: a beautiful set-up, a cake made just for them, and the moment they discover they're allowed to dig right in. If you're thinking about booking one, here's what to expect at a cake smash session in my Leeming studio.

What is a cake smash photo shoot?

A cake smash is a short, fun photo session where your baby gets their very own cake to explore, squish and (usually) taste. We start with a few clean portraits, then bring out the cake and let your little one go for it. The result is a mix of sweet, timeless portraits and hilarious, messy, full-of-personality photos you'll treasure forever.

When is the best age for a cake smash?

The ideal time is a few weeks before your baby's first birthday. Most babies are sitting confidently but not yet walking, which means they stay put on the set and give you those classic cake smash moments. Booking before the birthday also means your photos are ready in time for party invitations, thank-you cards or sharing with family who can't be there on the day.

If your baby is a little younger and you'd like to capture sitting, crawling or first steps without the cake, a milestone session is a lovely alternative.

What's included in my cake smash sessions

  • A one-hour session in my studio in Leeming
  • Your smash cake, designed to match your colours or theme
  • Set design, props and styling planned with you before the session
  • Access to my baby wardrobe for outfits
  • A proof gallery emailed the same day
  • 12 fully retouched, high-resolution digital images

My cake smash session is $550, and a $200 deposit secures your date. You don't need to organise the cake, the backdrop or the props. I take care of all of it.

Choosing a theme and colours

Before your session we'll chat about the look you love. Some families choose soft, classic neutrals; others go bright and playful or match the colours of the birthday party. A theme isn't essential, though. Simple and timeless styling always looks beautiful, and it means your photos won't date.

What should my baby wear?

  • Keep it simple. A cute romper, tutu, bloomers or overalls work well and let the cake and your baby be the stars.
  • Choose colours that suit your set. I'll help you match your outfit to the theme, or you can borrow something from my baby wardrobe.
  • Bring a spare outfit for going home in, because there will be cake everywhere!

What to bring to your cake smash

  • A change of clothes and plenty of wipes
  • Your baby's favourite snack, drink and comforter
  • A towel for the trip home
  • Anything sentimental you'd like included, like a special toy or a birthday sign

If your baby has any food allergies or dietary needs, let me know when we plan your session so the cake can suit them.

Tips for a happy cake smash

  • Book around naps. A well-rested, fed baby is a happy baby. We'll choose a session time that suits their routine.
  • Don't worry if they're unsure. Some babies dive straight in; others poke the cake very carefully. Both make wonderful photos, and I'll give them all the time they need.
  • Relax and have fun. Babies pick up on your mood, so the more you're laughing, the more they will be too.
